The party’s former leadership contender and current defence spokesman, Bill Etheridge, revealed he would not be supporting its flagship pledges to introduce mandatory FGM checks for schoolgirls and an immediate ban on new Muslim faith schools.
In a bombshell interview with express.co.uk the West Midlands MEP insisted he was still supportive of Mr Nuttall’s leadership and vowed not to quit the party.
But his angry and passionate denouncement of the policy lays bare the huge rift it has opened up within the party, with many MEPs furious about the way it has been rolled out.
It is understood that almost none of Ukip’s representatives in Brussels knew about the policy, which is being championed by Mr Nuttall’s political advisors, until it appeared in media reports.
On the day it was announced Ukip’s foreign affairs spokesman James Carver caused a storm when he resigned from his post saying he could not support the party’s policy to ban the burka.
Since then officials within the party leadership team has been scrambling to arrange phone conversations and one-on-one meetings with disenchanted MEPs in a bid to stave off a full-scale rebellion.
