They're probably just listening to My Dad Wrote a Porno, the latest podcast to gather a cultish following among Londoners. The show is presented by Jamie Morton, his friend and colleague James Cooper, and Radio 1 DJ Alice Levine. The trio met while at university in Leeds and alongside their careers in television and radio, have worked on creative projects together and separately since. The idea for the show came about when Morton was asked by his 60 year-old father to have a look at the first chapter of a novel he was writing, Belinda Blinked. "When I read it, I realised it was porn and I thought 'oh my god what the hell are you doing, this is ridiculous, '" says Morton. "It's so terrible. We were all out for a Christmas dinner together with our friends and when I started reading everyone started chipping in, a bit like the podcast actually, just enjoying the hilarity of the moment. Before long, the 13-part comedy series was born. "We had to wait for Dad to finish the book first, " explains Morton. "I'm waiting this very day for the book to be finished, " Levine chimes in, giving me my first hint that, like so many of Belinda's encounters with various men in black thongs, the finale episode I am yet to listen to might disappoint. Listeners have avidly downloaded the casts for the past 13 Mondays to hear Morton read out his father's work, and dissect it with his pals. Inspired by the success of 50 Shades of Grey, Rocky Flintstone (to call him by his nom de plume) tells the unintentionally hilarious tale of Belinda Blumenthal as she tries to succeed in the 'sexy' world of the pots and pans business, which involves everything from naked regional sales meetings and trysts with sex-crazed Duchesses to erotic charity tombolas. Who knew. The author's way with words is just as compelling, with comparisons of breasts to pomegranates and other body parts to rivets on the "fateful" Titanic. And as Jamie discovers more about his father than he bargained for, including his questionable familiarity with the female anatomy and common syntax, the presenters' rapport is contagious. Equally palpable is their fondness for each other and, importantly, for Rocky himself, who sometimes seems to forget about erotic content all together, all high on kitchenware sales numbers and other inane details. The comedy never feels cruel, however, and it's this perfect balance between funny and gentle that has drawn a cult following of "Belinkers" and had the phrase "pornoday" trending across social media as weary commuters tuned in this winter.
